Tàpies Museum

The Museu Tàpies is a cultural center and museum located on Carrer d'Aragó in Barcelona, Catalonia, dedicated primarily to the life and work of the Catalan painter Antoni Tàpies. Formerly known as the Fundació Antoni Tàpies, the institution was created by the artist himself in 1984 and opened to the public in June 1990. It stands as one of the most important repositories of Tàpies' art and a significant venue for the study and promotion of modern and contemporary art in Spain.

Antoni Tàpies established the Fundació in 1984 with the aim of creating a center for the study and promotion of contemporary art. The institution was the result of the artist's own initiative, reflecting his commitment to fostering knowledge of modern artistic practice. The museum opened its doors in June 1990 after several years of preparation. In 2010, the foundation reopened following two years of renovation work carried out by architect Iñaki Ábalos and his associate Àbalos i Sentkiewicz. Since 2015, the director of the Fundació Antoni Tàpies has been Carlos Guerra, with Jesús i Mònica Marull serving as museum conservator.

The Fundació owns one of the most complete collections of Tàpies' work, comprising more than 300 works spanning all periods of his artistic career. The collection was built primarily through donations by Antoni and Teresa Tàpies. Beyond Tàpies' own oeuvre, the institution's underground spaces house the painter's personal collection, which includes works by Francisco de Goya, Zurbarán, Picasso, Joan Miró, Marcel Duchamp, Georges Braque, Hans Arp, Paul Klee, Max Ernst, Vassily Kandinsky, and Willem de Kooning, as well as African art, pre-Columbian pieces, medieval works, archaeological objects, and books including incunabula, manuscripts, a 16th-century Coptic book, and a 15th-century Bible. The museum's activities extend beyond permanent display to encompass temporary exhibitions covering all artistic genres, symposia, lectures, film seasons, and publications. The foundation also developed the "arts combinatoires" project, integrating the museum with the internet to create educational content, exhibitions, and research opportunities.

The collection's strength lies in its comprehensive representation of Tàpies' entire artistic evolution, from early periods to late works. Among the most visible works associated with the institution is the sculpture Núvol i cadira (Cloud and Chair), created by Tàpies to adorn the building's facade, which has become a symbol of the foundation. Following the 2010 renovation, the opening exhibition featured the sculpture Mitjó (Sock), placed on the foundation's terrace according to an earlier project by Tàpies. This work had been commissioned in 1992 by the city of Barcelona for the oval hall of the Palau Nacional on Montjuïc, the seat of the MNAC.

The museum occupies the former Montaner i Simon publishing house in Barcelona's Eixample district, a building designed by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Constructed between 1880 and 1885, it represents an early stage in the evolution of Catalan Modernisme and was the first building in the Eixample to integrate industrial typology, combining exposed brick and iron in its fabric. The facade was the first in the district to unite naked brick with wrought iron in an urban context. The building served as the headquarters of the Montaner i Simón publishing house, owned by Ramon Montaner (a relative of the architect) and Francesc Simon, where writers such as Pere Calders and Josep Soler Vidal worked. Between 1986 and 1990, architects Roser Amadó and Lluís Domènech Girbau restored and refurbished the structure to accommodate the foundation. The building was declared a monument of historical interest in 1997.

The Museu Tàpies is situated on Carrer d'Aragó in Barcelona and is accessible via the Passeig de Gràcia metro station, served by lines L2, L3, and L4.
