Textile Museum and Documentation Centre

The Textile Museum and Documentation Centre (Catalan: Centre de Documentació i Museu Tèxtil) is a museum institution in Terrassa, Spain, a city with an important textile tradition. Managed by a consortium of Terrassa Town Council and Diputació de Barcelona (Barcelona Provincial Council), it presents a panoramic view of the different styles and techniques used worldwide in fabric making throughout history. The museum is part of the Barcelona Provincial Council Local Museum Network. Founded in 1946, it holds the status of a Bien de Interés Cultural with the category of Monument, having been declared a historic-artistic monument in 1962.

The museum's extensive collection comprises more than 20,000 representative pieces of textile history from around the world. Rather than being displayed permanently, the collection is presented through temporary monographic exhibitions lasting ten to twelve months in the Modernisme area on the first floor, and two to three years on the second floor. The documentation centre maintains an extensive library specializing in textile and fashion, a photographic archive, and a rich fabric collection. The institution provides services to companies and, through its training centre and various agreements with universities and educational institutions, promotes contact and knowledge exchange among sector professionals. The museum operates the IMATEX image bank, through which companies and individuals can access the collection, which consists primarily of clothing and fabric samples.

The collection covers fabrics from the Mediterranean area, including pre-industrial pieces such as Egyptian, Andalusi, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque textiles, as well as industrial fabrics from the 19th and 20th centuries and sample books from textile industries, mainly from the Vallès region and the rest of Catalonia. Holdings also include fabrics from China and India and a small collection of pre-Columbian American samples. Other significant categories encompass prints, embroideries, clothing from the 18th to 20th centuries, liturgical vestments from the 16th to 20th centuries, and accessories from the 17th to 20th centuries. The museum preserves original 20th-century designs, Jacquard loom pattern cards, and a Modernista collection featuring works by artists, designers, and Catalan companies from the early 20th century. The restoration workshop, the only public textile restoration workshop in Catalonia at 200 square metres, has treated notable pieces including the textile heritage of the Patum de Berga, fabrics from the Antoni Gaudí House Museum, the cape of Saint Ermengol, and the pillow from the tomb of King Peter the Great at the Monastery of Santes Creus.

The museum is located at Salmerón Street, number 25, next to the Carthusian castle of Vallparadís in Terrassa. Its current headquarters, designed by architect Camil Pallàs, was built in Parc de Vallparadís. The building was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1962, giving it the status of Bien de Interés Cultural with the category of Monument.
