The Robert McLaughlin Gallery is a public art museum in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, and the largest public art gallery in the Regional Municipality of Durham. The gallery's origins trace to Oshawa designer William Caldwell, who organized a group of artists to establish a commercial gallery space on Simcoe Street North. Shortly thereafter, Ewart McLaughlin and his wife, Alexandra Luke, a member of the Painters Eleven, offered financial support and a significant collection of works to help create a public gallery for the city. The gallery was incorporated in 1967 and named for Ewart's grandfather, Robert McLaughlin. In 1987, the institution moved into a larger, modern building designed by Arthur Erickson to accommodate growing needs. In October 1952, Luke organized through the South Ontario Art Gallery Circuit an exhibition of all abstract Canadian art that opened at Adelaide House in Oshawa. This was the first Canadian exhibition of abstract painting assembled on a national scale and devoted exclusively to the art form. The gallery also holds significant archives related to Painters Eleven and maintains the largest collection of works by the group in Canada. Additionally, the institution houses the Thomas Bouckley Collection, comprising over 3,500 historical photographs documenting the visual history of Oshawa and its surrounding region.
