Tim Van Laere Gallery

Tim Van Laere Gallery is a contemporary art gallery founded in 1997 by Tim Van Laere. The institution operates two locations, with its original and primary space in Antwerp, Belgium, and a second venue in Rome, Italy. It holds a significant position on the global art scene due to its dual focus on promoting young, emerging artists and representing established international figures. The gallery exhibits works across a wide spectrum of media, encompassing sculpture, painting, video, installation, and photography.

Tim Van Laere established the gallery in Antwerp in 1997. Over the following decades, the gallery built a reputation for showcasing artists from numerous countries working across diverse media. In April 2019, the Antwerp operation moved into a newly constructed, 1000-square-meter building designed specifically for the gallery by the architecture firm OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen. A major expansion occurred in the fall of 2023, when the gallery opened its second location in Rome.

The gallery's program is characterized by a commitment to both emerging and established contemporary artists. It represents an international roster that includes prominent figures such as Adrian Ghenie, Jonathan Meese, and Franz West, alongside emerging Belgian artists like Bram Demunter, Ben Sledsens, and Rinus Van de Velde. The gallery maintains an active exhibition schedule, presenting approximately six to ten exhibitions per year, and regularly participates in international art fairs. It also collaborates with numerous contemporary art museums and institutions.

The gallery has hosted significant solo exhibitions by artists such as Kati Heck, Jonathan Meese, Anton Henning, Adrian Ghenie, and Rinus Van de Velde. Notable past exhibitions include a 2006 solo show by Franz West, a 2009 exhibition by Atelier Van Lieshout, and solo presentations for Peter Rogiers in 2010 and Kati Heck in 2011. Group exhibitions have featured prominent pairings, such as the 2014 exhibition Portray, which included Vivian Maier, Pablo Picasso, Armen Eloyan, and Tal R, and the 2015 exhibition We will begin by drawing, we shall continue to draw, and then we shall draw some more, featuring Georg Baselitz and James Ensor. Other notable solo shows include Rinus Van de Velde in 2017 and Friedrich Kunath in 2018.

The Antwerp location is housed in a 1000-square-meter building that was specifically designed for the gallery by the architectural practice OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen, into which the gallery moved in April 2019. The Rome location is situated within the 17th-century Palazzo Donarelli Ricci, a structure that incorporates terraced houses dating to the 15th century. The palazzo was designed by the architect-owner Giacomo della Porta. It is located on the historical Via Giulia, a roughly half-mile-long cobbled street lined with churches and elegant palazzi, beginning with the ivy-covered Farnese arch designed by Michelangelo and erected in 1603.
