Voerman Stadsmuseum Hattem

Voerman Stadsmuseum Hattem is a museum for fine arts, history, and archaeology located in the city of Hattem in the Netherlands. Named after the painters Jan Voerman senior and Jan Voerman junior, the institution holds a varied collection spanning regional archaeological finds, local historical artifacts, and works by artists who lived in or depicted Hattem. The museum serves as a cultural center for the Hanseatic city, combining its permanent art and history displays with temporary exhibitions, educational programs, and accessibility initiatives such as the Blikvanger audio app for visually impaired visitors.

The museum's origins trace back to 1949, when the Foundation Oud Hattem was established and a historical exhibition was organized to mark the 650th anniversary of the city. General practitioner M. Sypkens Smit and his son J.H. Sypkens Smit, passionate collectors of Hattem-related artifacts, books, and art, laid the groundwork for the historical collection. In 1952, the Oudheidskamer Hattem opened in the Dijkpoort. It relocated in 1971 or 1972 to a 17th-century building in the Achterstraat, becoming a permanent regional museum known as the Streekmuseum. An adjacent house was incorporated in 1984, expanding the name to Streekmuseum Hattem-Voermanhuis. A significant bequest of works by Jan Voerman senior and junior later prompted a rename to Voerman Museum Hattem. Until January 2019, the museum shared an entrance with the Anton Pieck Museum. The institution adopted its current name, Voerman Stadsmuseum Hattem, in 2021.

The museum's collection encompasses three primary domains: visual arts, local history, and archaeology. The art holdings focus on painters and sculptors associated with Hattem, prominently featuring the IJssel river landscapes and other works by Jan Voerman senior, alongside the Verkade album illustrations and later independent works of Jan Voerman junior. The historical collection includes artifacts related to the Hattem patriot Herman Willem Daendels and the Hoenwaard region. Archaeological displays feature local finds, including items from the medieval castle de Dikke Tinne and artifacts from the Bell Beaker culture. The historical and archaeological highlights include a 4,000-year-old bell beaker and bell beaker dish from the Bell Beaker culture, dating from 2400 to 1900 BCE, and a scale model of the medieval castle de Dikke Tinne. Other notable artworks include paintings by Jo Koster, Johannes Bosboom, Adrianus Eversen, Jan van Vuuren, A.J. Zwart, and Peter Snayers, sculptures by Bé Thoden van Velzen, and a characteristic portrait head of Jan Voerman senior sculpted by Elizabeth Varga.

The museum is housed in two historic buildings, described as former city farms or patrician residences, situated on the Achterstraat in the medieval center of Hattem. The primary structure is a 17th-century dwelling. The complex includes the Daendels sitting room on the ground floor, named after the local patriot, which serves as a space for visitors to relax. The museum features a courtyard designed as an intimate sculpture garden, and a coffee room established in the former scullery of the medieval house. A dedicated space on the first floor hosts temporary exhibitions, and the Zicht-op-Hattem-zaal utilizes a specialized hanging system of metal cords and displays supported by the Vereniging Rembrandt and the Turing Foundation for mini exhibitions.

Voerman Stadsmuseum Hattem is located on the Achterstraat in Hattem, Netherlands. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00, and Sunday from 13:00 to 17:00, remaining closed on Mondays and specific holidays. The museum participates in the Netherlands Museum Pass program, selling passes on site and accepting them for admission. Standard admission is 12.50 euros for adults, 6.25 euros for children aged 5 to 17, and free for children 4 and under. The museum shop, located in the entrance hall and also operating online, is freely accessible without an admission ticket.
