Overview

Zawyeh Gallery is an independent visual art gallery dedicated to promoting Palestinian art, with locations in Ramallah, Palestine, and Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Founded in 2013 by Ziad Anani, it was established as a platform to support both emerging and established Palestinian artists, connecting them with international audiences. The gallery's program encompasses a wide range of mediums, including painting, sculpture, installation, video, and photography. Its exhibitions and represented artworks frequently engage with themes of identity, history, social justice, displacement, and resilience, serving to highlight the Palestinian narrative and cultural heritage on a global stage.

Founding & history

Ziad Anani founded Zawyeh Gallery in Ramallah in 2013 with the mission of supporting local emerging and established artists and showcasing their work internationally. The gallery quickly became active, organizing group and solo exhibitions such as the 2013 group exhibition Spaces, and the 2014 exhibitions Colors of Life, In Memory, and Nabil Anani's solo exhibition Pre-1948 Palestine. In March 2020, Zawyeh expanded its operations by opening a second location in Dubai, situated within Alserkal Avenue. This expansion allowed the gallery to further its international reach and bridge the gap between the Palestinian art scene and the broader global audience. Beyond its physical spaces, Zawyeh has participated in numerous international art fairs, including Art Dubai, Abu Dhabi Art, Beirut Art Fair, Contemporary Istanbul, and the Paris Contemporary Art Show (P/CAS).

Collection scope

The gallery's collection and exhibition program emphasize the diverse nature of modern and contemporary Palestinian art. Zawyeh showcases artworks across a variety of mediums, featuring painting, sculpture, video art, installations, mixed media, and photography. The thematic focus of the holdings centers on the Palestinian experience, exploring concepts of identity, displacement, resilience, history, and social justice. By investing in the creativity and artistic talents of Palestinians from both the homeland and the diaspora, the gallery uses its collection to maintain a strong sense of cultural identity and present the Palestinian narrative internationally, viewing artistic practice as a form of resilience in the face of adversaries.

Notable holdings

Zawyeh Gallery represents a roster of prominent Palestinian artists, including Nabil Anani, Khaled Hourani, Sliman Mansour, Tayseer Barakat, Rana Samara, Ruba Salameh, Bashar Alhroub, Yazan Abu Salameh, Dia Mrad, and Saher Nassar. The gallery has also represented or exhibited the work of Malak Mattar and Samir Salameh. Specific notable works and exhibitions include Nabil Anani's 2014 solo exhibition Pre-1948 Palestine, and the 2015 group exhibition Narratives, which featured artists such as Abed Alem, Ahmad Kanaan, Amani Harhash, Asad Azzi, Irina Naji, Jawad Malhi, Marwa Najjar, Maisara Barood, Mohammad Khalil, Sana Bishara, Sliman Mansour, and Tayseer Barakat. Building & site

The gallery operates from two distinct sites. Its original and primary space is located in Ramallah, Palestine, where the concept of Zawyeh, meaning a gathering space for sharing stories, wisdom, and art, originated. The second location was established in March 2020 at Alserkal Avenue in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This Dubai space functions as a prominent cultural center within the city's art district, distinguishing itself among local galleries through its exclusive dedication to Palestinian art. The Alserkal Avenue site provides a strategic platform that bridges the UAE and Palestine, attracting art lovers, collectors, and artists.

Visiting

Zawyeh Gallery maintains its founding location in Ramallah, Palestine, and its secondary venue in Alserkal Avenue, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The Dubai location is recognized as a necessary visit for collectors and art lovers seeking to explore Palestinian art within the UAE. The gallery operates as an independent entity under the direction of its founder, Ziad Anani. It continues its present role as a vital hub for contemporary and modern Palestinian art, organizing thematic exhibitions and participating in international art projects to ensure the ongoing global visibility of its represented artists.
