Chae Yong-sin

Chae Yong-sin is a Korean Minhwa artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at National Museum of Korea.

Chae Yong-sin painted Korean officials in stiff silk robes, but his brush moved like a gossip. He hid faces in shadow, leaving just the weight of a hat or the curl of a sleeve to tell you who sat for him. If you’ve ever squinted at an old family photo and guessed the mood from a coat’s cut, start with Portrait of a Government Official, look for the ink-stained cuff peeking from under a sleeve.
