Théodore De Schietere was a Brussels tax collector who painted in stolen hours, turning his office ink into washes of pearly light on the city’s rooftops. In 1807 he slipped a tiny oil sketch titled “View from the Hôtel de Ville” into a civic ledger, now in Brussels’ Royal Museums of Fine Arts, where the square’s cobbles gleam as though freshly wetted.
