A tree gives the landscape painter a problem in structure and light: trunk, limb, and a canopy that must read as foliage without being painted leaf by leaf. The oaks and poplars of the Barbizon school, and later the screens of Japanese masters, made the single tree a subject in its own right, not just scenery.
