Orășanu Matache

Orășanu Matache is an artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at "Dimitrie Gusti" National Village Museum.

Matache kept a tin of dried lizard skins in his Bucharest studio and sometimes painted saints with their scales showing. In one drawing, Saint George spears a tiny green dragon outside a rocky cliff, while an angel drops a golden crown from a cloud. The whole thing looks like a medieval knight rode straight out of a Baroque frame into a Romantic landscape.

If you like this mix of gold filigree and mountain mist, tap “neoclassical” to see how other artists gilded their heroes.
