Maria Malibran scandalized Paris in 1829 by singing a role composed for a man, trousers and all, and then doing it again the next night in a dress. She carried a pet monkey in her coach and once rode forty miles on horseback just to sing an encore. Her voice split critics: some called it reckless, others revolutionary.
You can still hear the argument in her portrait, where the pencil strokes chase the wig’s curls like they’re racing her restless mind. Look up her 1829 drawing and you’ll meet a woman who made art out of defiance.
