Howard Carter’s watercolours capture the sun-bleached walls of Deir al-Bahri, copying 3,500-year-old painted reliefs of queens and royal symbols. In 1896 he traced Queen Aahmes Nefertari’s serene profile and the looping cartouche of Queen Makare Hatshepsut, inked on paper rather than stone.
