Master of the Battle of Anghiari

Master of the Battle of Anghiari is a conventional name used for an unidentified artist, applied because no documented identity survives. The name refers to work connected with the Battle of Anghiari, the large mural Leonardo da Vinci began for the council hall of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence around 1505 but never completed and which is now lost. Anonymous masters and copyists are known through drawings and paintings that record or echo Leonardo's celebrated composition of struggling horsemen. The artist's true name, dates, and biography are unknown.
