Michiel van Vries

Kingdom of the Netherlands

Michiel van Vries is a Kingdom of the Netherlands Dutch Golden Age painter. 2 works are cataloged here, principally at Rijksmuseum, most of them oil paintings.

Dutch painter Michiel van Vries specialized in quiet waterfront scenes of the 1650s, where brick cottages sit low beside still canals and ripples barely disturb the reflection. His “Old country cottage on the water” shows a single-story house with whitewashed walls and a low, thatched roof, its back door opening straight onto a narrow lane that runs parallel to the water. In “Old Cottage on the Water,” the same quiet mood returns, with a little wooden footbridge leading across the canal to a garden gate. Tap the painting’s foreground to zoom into the moss on the bricks.
