Lionel Grimston Fawkes spent years sketching the tiled arches and striped stone of Córdoba’s mosque, always returning with a sodden watercolor block. He liked the way light turned gold and blue into something solid. The arches lean and tilt in his work, as if the building itself might sway.
His watercolors feel almost alive, less like postcards, more like the place itself nudged you awake. Start with his Interior of the Mosque-Cathedral, Cordoba; the cool blues and warm stone will pull you straight into the nave.
