Interior of the Mosque-Cathedral, Cordoba is a 1885 watercolor by Lionel Grimston Fawkes, a Impressionism work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This painting shows a long, empty hallway with tall columns and arched ceilings. The arches have alternating red and white stripes, and the columns are thick and plain. The walls are light, almost beige, and the floor looks worn and simple. There’s a small figure near the back, but it’s hard to make out details. The artist focused on the play of light and shadow in the space, making the arches stand out. The painting feels like a quick sketch rather than a polished work, with loose brushstrokes that capture the mood. Next, check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more of this artist’s work.
