William Harrison Scarborough was an American portrait painter active chiefly in South Carolina. Born in Dover, Tennessee, in 1812, he studied art and medicine in Nashville and then trained under Horace Harding in Cincinnati. He settled in Charleston in 1836, lived in Darlington from 1839, and made Columbia his home from 1846 until his death there in 1871.
Among the most prolific Southern portraitists of the nineteenth century, he produced several hundred likenesses of planters, politicians, and their families, including a portrait of John C. Calhoun. His works are held by the Gibbes Museum of Art, the Columbia Museum of Art, and the South Carolina State Museum.
