Ruth Whittier Shute (1803-1882) was an American folk portrait painter born in Dover, New Hampshire. In 1827 she married Samuel Addison Shute, and the couple worked as itinerant portraitists across New England and New York, including New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Rhode Island. From about 1830 to 1833 they collaborated closely, producing watercolor and oil likenesses marked by bold, decorative patterning and frank characterization typical of the period's untrained limners.
After Samuel died in 1836, Ruth remarried and settled in Lexington, Kentucky, where she continued painting for decades. Her last known portrait dates to 1874.
