Artist

Frederick Bauhof

British, b. 1863

Frederick Bauhof is a British Ashcan School artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Frederick Bauhof was born in London.

Frederick Bauhof kept to himself in a rented studio above a Berlin bakery, where the smell of fresh bread seeped through the floorboards. His one surviving painting, His only pair, shows two scuffed shoes propped against a wall, their laces untied. It’s the kind of quiet scene you might overlook on a gallery wall, or stop to wonder who left them there.

Tap the title to stand with those shoes; you’ll notice the way the light catches the cracked leather.
