Yi Ch'ang

Yi Ch'ang is an Ashcan School artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.

Yi Ch'ang kept a small studio above a noodle shop, where the steam curled around his brushes and the owner yelled up about cold kimchi. Every afternoon he walked the Nakdong River banks, sketching the same old man mending nets in the same yellow light, no matter the season. Grab a coffee and start with Nakdonggang Grandfather, a painting that feels like a photograph you can’t quite place, then notice how the river’s gray-blue keeps pulling you back into the frame.
