The label "After Ma Yuan" identifies a work made in the style of, or copied from, the Southern Song painter Ma Yuan rather than an autograph piece. Ma Yuan was active around 1190 to 1225 and served as a painter at the Southern Song court in Hangzhou. With his contemporary Xia Gui he defined the so-called Ma-Xia school of landscape, known for asymmetrical compositions that push forms to one side and leave large areas of empty space, earning him the nickname "one-corner Ma."
His misty, atmospheric landscapes were widely imitated, and many later paintings bear his name as a stylistic attribution.
