Aleksey Kolesov’s small oil portraits capture 19th-century Moscow artists at work and in repose. In Portrait of the artist Sergey Zaryanko, painted in 1874, he shows Zaryanko in a quiet studio setting, brush in hand and palette ready, the room softly lit by a north-facing window. Kolesov belonged to the same circle of Moscow realists who gathered around the Stroganov School, where techniques of careful observation and restrained color were prized.
