Ekkei Reikaku was a Japanese monk and calligrapher who died in 1609, active in the tradition of Zen Buddhist literary culture that flourished in the monasteries of Kyoto. In that milieu poetry, calligraphy, and ink painting were closely linked, and learned monks often added inscriptions to paintings. He is known chiefly for a poetic inscription he brushed on Sparrows and Bamboo, an ink composition by the monk-painter Shiken Saido now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Such inscriptions paired classical verse with painted images and reflect the cultivated monastic learning of late medieval Japan.
