Franz Jaschke painted the buildings and public squares of Transylvania in the early 19th century, leaving sharp-eyed views of market churches and civic spaces. One of his real canvases shows Biserica din Piața Mare din Cluj, the large Gothic Protestant church that still stands today in the heart of Cluj-Napoca. Look past the steeples and you’ll notice how the artist lined up the angles to catch the morning light on the stone.
