This Brooklyn-born painter spent his evenings in saloons sketching the patrons because he liked the light on their faces and the stories in their hands. In 1847 he painted himself into the corner of a tavern mirror, not for vanity, but to prove that art could come from anywhere—even the smoky back room of a place called The Drowned Rat. Take a closer look at *Self Portrait*; notice how the background swallows his coat while his face stays sharp, like he’s fighting to be seen.
