Maurice Quentin de La Tour (1704-1788) was a French portraitist of the Rococo period who worked almost exclusively in pastel. Born in Saint-Quentin, he built his reputation in Paris and was admitted to the Academie royale de peinture et de sculpture. He served the court of Louis XV and portrayed many leading figures of his day, including Madame de Pompadour, Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Jean le Rond d'Alembert.
His pastels are noted for their lively expressions and acute observation of character, and they helped raise pastel portraiture to a respected place in eighteenth-century French art.
