The Human Figure

The human body is the measure painting keeps returning to. Renaissance workshops drilled it from the antique and the live model, treating anatomy as the grammar of the art, so that a turned shoulder or a planted foot could carry the weight of a whole composition. It is the subject by which painters were judged.
