Maximilien Villers was a French artist who died in 1836, born at Saint-Martin-du-Parc. His activity spanned several fields: he worked as a painter and miniature painter, and also as a horticulturist, landscape gardener, and architect. This combination of pursuits places him among the versatile practitioners of late eighteenth and early nineteenth century France, where the design of gardens and buildings was often allied with the fine arts.
As a miniaturist he belonged to a tradition of small-scale portrait and decorative painting that remained popular in France through the Napoleonic period and the Restoration.
