Wilhelm August Rudolf Lehmann (1819-1905) was a German-born painter who later became a British citizen. Born in Ottensen, near Hamburg, he was the son of the painter Leo Lehmann and the brother of the painter Henri Lehmann. He trained in Paris and Rome and studied with Peter von Cornelius and Wilhelm von Kaulbach.
His large painting on the draining of the Pontine Marshes under Sixtus V was exhibited in Paris in 1846 and acquired by the French state. After settling in London in 1866, he built a successful career as a portraitist, working extensively among the English aristocracy.
