William Herbert spent his days tucked in London’s print shops, where he’d sketch the city’s street life in quick, sharp lines. He kept a little notebook of faces he spotted on his walks, hawker, chimney sweep, pickpocket, and tucked them into his prints like hidden cameos. Hunt down Print Collection (1st March 1753) online and look for the third plate down: there’s a woman in a striped apron selling fish, her face half in shadow, caught mid-sentence.
