This printmaker turned his etching needle into a spotlight for faces on the edge of the known world. In Doi africani (doi mauri), Rembrandt’s burin carves the quiet dignity of two Mauritanian men, fezzes, draped cloth, and all, brought to paper in Amsterdam during the 1650s. The same plate he reused, inked deeper each time, so later impressions glow almost three-dimensional.
