Artist
Edward Clifford
Edward Clifford is an Impressionism artist. 1 work is cataloged here, principally at Victoria and Albert Museum.
Edward Clifford carried a sketchbook like a diary, filling it during train rides to London’s docks where sailors waited for letters home. The men in his drawings don’t pose, they lean, fidget, sometimes stare straight at you like they’ve just asked for the time. His pencil caught the light on a sailor’s collar or the crease of a frown before the next day’s rain washed it away.
Why he’s here: tap Sailor with Hands in Pockets (1880) and see how a simple line can hold an entire conversation.
