Barna da Siena

Barna da Siena is a Sienese School artist. 2 works are cataloged here, principally at Ashmolean Museum.

Siena’s 1300s altarpieces glow with gold leaf and storybook scenes. Barna da Siena painted The Mystical Marriage of Saint Catherine and The Crucifixion and Lamentation in jewel-bright tempera, giving saints and angels the same weight as the people around them. The halos catch the candlelight like real gold, and every fold of cloth tells part of the tale.

Step closer to The Crucifixion, look how the mourners’ faces tilt in grief, but the sky stays calm gold.
