Theodule Ribot was a French realist painter and printmaker, born in 1823 at Saint-Nicolas-d'Attez and died in 1891. Largely self-taught, he settled in Paris and began to exhibit seriously in the late 1850s, painting domestic genre scenes, still lifes, portraits, and religious subjects. His work is marked by strong chiaroscuro and a sober, dark palette that reflects his admiration for Spanish and Dutch masters such as Jusepe de Ribera and Rembrandt.
His religious painting Saint Sebastian, Martyr drew attention at the Salon of 1865, and he was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1878.
