Susan Macdowell Eakins was an American painter and photographer, born in Philadelphia in 1851 and died there in 1938. She trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where she won prizes including the Mary Smith Prize, and she studied under Thomas Eakins, whom she married in 1884. She painted portraits and domestic interiors in a dark, realist manner close to her husband's, and she was also an accomplished photographer.
After his death in 1916 she returned to painting more actively. Long overshadowed by Thomas Eakins, her work has been reassessed by modern scholarship.
