The bijin-ga, or picture of a beautiful woman, is a pillar of the Japanese woodblock tradition. Courtesans and townswomen in elaborate kimono were drawn for the line of a sleeve and the turn of a neck, and the genre, perfected by Utamaro, made elegance itself the subject.
