This German painter worked around 1500, when altarpieces told Bible stories in glowing colors. In The Holy Trinity with the Virgin Mary and St John the Evangelist (1503), saints kneel in a golden-washed heaven, their robes draped in folds that catch the light. The scene feels distant yet immediate, the figures float against a flat gold background, a tradition from medieval art.
