Augener & Co. spent their days turning other people’s music into sheet music you could hold in your hands, thick paper, crisp edges, and ink that didn’t smudge. They sold stacks of it from a London shop that smelled like varnish and candle wax, turning concerts into something you could play in your parlor. If you’ve ever sung along to a Christmas carol at home, you’ve probably held one of their prints; look for the tiny “H Beard Print Collection” stamp on the back.
