Master of San Pietro in Sylvis

This anonymous Italian painter from the 1300s made small devotional panels in the Gothic style. Their Man of Sorrows (1322), with its solemn Christ figure in a gold-leafed frame, belongs to a tradition where art was meant to focus prayers.
