The attribution "After Ni Zan" denotes a work made in the manner of, or copied from, the Chinese painter Ni Zan (1301-1374), not an original by his hand. Ni Zan was one of the Four Masters of the Yuan dynasty and a leading literati landscapist. His paintings are famously spare: a few sparse trees, an empty pavilion, and bands of water and distant hills, rendered in dry, restrained ink that embodies the literati ideal of blandness and detachment.
His reputation became so great that owning a work attributed to him was a mark of taste, and later artists produced many imitations and homages bearing his name.
