On the canvas a simple bowl of fruit sits on a dark wooden table, next to a cracked vase and a folded cloth. Andreescu painted this still life in the late 1870s, a time when Romanian artists were beginning to study Western techniques. The light falls on the fruit in a way that hints at the use of chiaroscuro, the contrast of light and shadow, to give the objects a three‑dimensional feel. You can see more of his work at the Museum of Ethnography.
