Clewlines and Buntlines

About this work

This sketch shows a tangled web of lines crisscrossing a light background. At the center, a small, faint ship struggles in rough waves. The lines look like both ropes and wind, swirling around the boat and fading into the edges. The ship is barely visible, almost lost in the chaos of marks—like the artist wanted to show how overwhelming the sea can feel. The title *Clewlines and Buntlines* hints these are real nautical terms for ropes. Check out The Cleveland Museum of Art to see this sketch in person.
