The Holy Family Under a Canopy is a 1525 ink by Sebald Beham, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This print shows a woman holding a baby while sitting on a cloth-covered surface. Behind them, a canopy with a crisscross pattern frames the scene. To the left, a small figure stands near a tree branch, and a dog lies on the ground below. The artist used sharp lines to create texture, especially in the fabric and hair. This style was common in woodcuts, where the design is carved into wood and then printed. Next, check out the technique: woodcut to see how artists made prints like this.
Sebald Beham (1500–1550) was a German painter and printmaker, mainly known for his very small engravings.
