This sketch shows a tall, bare-chested man with curly hair and a beard, standing on a raised platform. He holds a long staff and looks upward, with one arm stretched out. Around him, smaller figures kneel or crouch—some appear to be praying or hiding. The background has rough, textured lines, and the whole scene is in two earthy brown tones. The artist used shading to make the figures pop against the dark background, a trick called chiaroscuro. This was common in Baroque art to create drama with light and shadow. Next, check out the technique: etching to see how artists like this made detailed prints.
