The Birth of Saint John the Baptist is a 1539 ink by Giulio Bonasone, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This engraving shows a busy scene with many figures in a grand room. On the left, a woman kneels holding a baby while others gather around her. In the center, a group of people stands near a pillar, some pointing or gesturing. To the right, two muscular men pose dramatically, one holding a scroll. The background has tall buildings and a sky with clouds. Notice the tiny details in the clothing and faces—each person looks different, yet part of the same story.
