Lady in a Large Coat is a 1622 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This etching shows a woman in a voluminous coat with a wide-brimmed hat. Her clothes look heavy for the time. The shadows and lines make the coat look real. Callot was one of the best at etching. He made fine lines that look crisp even today. His work shows small details clearly. His style reminds me of Rembrandt’s etchings. Check out more of Callot’s prints at the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
