St. Barnabas, Apostle; St. Honofrius; St. Anthony of Padua; St. Basil the Great is a 1634 ink by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sheet shows four black-and-white sketches of religious figures, each in an oval frame. The top left has a robed man holding a book and pointing at a child. Next to it, another man wears a long robe and holds a tall cross. The bottom left shows a dramatic scene with a man in flames, while a woman and child look on. The last sketch depicts a bearded man with a glowing halo, standing under palm trees. These images use fine lines and shading to create depth, typical of the time. The flames in the bottom-left sketch are especially detailed, showing how the artist played with light and shadow. Want to see more like this?
