This drawing shows a busy, chaotic scene of soldiers marching. In the center, a man on horseback points forward, surrounded by armed troops. Behind him, a woman kneels, holding a child, while others rush past with flags and weapons. The background is packed with more soldiers, horses, and a distant battle. Notice how the artist used lots of fine lines to build up shadows and textures—this is called cross-hatching. The scene feels dramatic and crowded, but the details are sharp. Check out how cross-hatching works to create depth in prints.
