Fury is a 1525 ink by Gian Jacopo Caraglio, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows a muscular man tangled in writhing snakes. His face is twisted in pain, one arm raised as if fighting them off. The snakes coil around his legs, arms, and even his torso, their bodies tangled together. The background is dark and crowded with more snakes, their heads peeking out from the chaos. The artist used fine lines to build up the shadows and textures, making the muscles and snakes look almost three-dimensional. This kind of detailed linework is called cross-hatching. Try looking up technique: engraving, cross-hatching to see how artists create depth with just lines.
