The market by the Church of S. Domingos, Macau, with other architecture is a 3 by George Chinnery, a Romanticism work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This watercolor shows a busy market by a church in Macau. Stalls spill into the street. People crowd around food and goods. The church’s arches and columns rise in the background. Chinnery worked in Macau for years. He often sketched local life, not just grand buildings. His lines are quick but full of detail. Look for more of his drawings at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
The drawing depicts crowded market stalls near the Church of S. Domingos in Macau, accompanied by detailed studies of architectural elements such as arches, columns, and façades. It is part of an album containing 175 sketches made during travels in China and India. The album was bequeathed in 1928 by James Orange, consisting of 93 drawings by George Chinnery, who lived in Macau from 1825 until his death in 1852.
